Abstract
McClay elucidates the concept of self from theological point of view. Among other things, he sees that man in some sense is striving for a God's-eye view: not just one at particular moments in life, but one in his distilled essence, both as he was known and as he knew or tried to know oneself. Moreover, he sees it as an attempt to represent a soul, something whose nature is greater and deeper than any particular instance can adequately show.
