Abstract
Kevin McCain argues that our appearances are best explained by their truth, and that this gives us justification for believing in their contents-a conclusion which he uses to defuse a host of skeptical problems. Even if we have propositional justification for believing in how things appear, however, we have doxastic justification for such beliefs only if those beliefs are based on this propositional justification in the right kind of way. I argue that if McCain is correct about the source of our propositional justification, then this proper basing condition on doxastic justification is not ordinarily satisfied. For even if explanatory considerations favor the truth of our appearances, most people aren't disposed to recognize such considerations, much less give them a prominent role in nonreflective belief formation.
