Abstract
Americans are constantly struggling for liberty and equality. Although these concepts at times complement each other, they often are in tension because they point to different directions. This is apparent in parents' choice to send their children to private schools where they feel their children can get a better education. Although this may be true in some respects, most private schools target children from families that are financially secure. This gives those parents the liberty to send their children to the school of their choice, but it also leads to social and economic inequality.
