Freedom of speech: is America at high tide ... or low?

Abstract

Freedom of speech Interpretation and construction
Freedom of speech is less respected in the US at present, contrary to conventional belief. Taken in its true sense and as envisioned by the Founders, freedom of speech encompasses freedom for noninjurious speech, the absence of prior restraints and the punishment of injurious speech through due process. An examination of recent government initiatives reveals that these pillars are slowly being eroded. These actions include the Federal Elections Campaign Act of 1971, the laws governing employer participation in union elections and the weakening of libel laws.
