Abstract
A new collection of Mead's letters, To Cherish the Life of the World, edited by Margaret Caffrey and Patricia Francis, has almost nothing to say about this matter, at least not directly. This is a deliberate decision by the editors, but also an odd one, because so much of Mead's legacy hangs on what really happened in Samoa.
